FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tucson, AZ – June 29, 2023 – How does a 53-year-old organization like Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona respond to the growing number facing hunger in our community? By completely reinventing themselves.
This summer, Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona will begin making client meals in its own commercial kitchen. With the purchase of the former El Indio Restaurant, Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona has deepened its commitment to feed the hungry throughout Southern Arizona.
Once complete, the new facility will enable Mobile Meals to quadruple the number of nutritious and medically tailored meals being served to those in need. It will also house the nonprofit’s staff, and features a Community Room, sponsored by the Arizona Diamondbacks, available to other organizations in need of a meeting space.
This is a shift from the previous 50 years during which Mobile Meals has partnered with local hospitals to prepare lunch and dinners that volunteers deliver to those facing hunger. However, with an aging population and the rapidly rising cost of living, the need for food has outpaced what hospitals can reasonably provide.
“Often, our clients, due to health challenges or a lack of resources, have lost a piece of their independence. Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona helps restore that independence,” states Board President, Roger Clark.
The new Mobile Meals kitchen will have the capacity to produce more than 400,000 meals annually, a four-fold increase from the current model that produces approximately 100,000 meals a year.
In addition to the increased capacity to feed more people, the new Mobile Meals Kitchen will offer a menu of meal choices to clients, empowering them to select their meals and further restoring dignity to their dining experience and increased independence.
A grand opening celebration planned in the fall of 2023.
